PlayStation Update Coming April 26th

Its Tuesday morning again which means the US PlayStation Store is supposed to receive the April 26th Update. This week should feature three PS3 games, one Mini, assorted songs for Rock Band 3, and a substantial amount of stuff for Plus subscribers. As good as this sounds, there seems to be nothing to be excited about. The update is very unlikely to occur. With the recent outage and countless rumors circulating it seems no one knows when the PlayStation Network will return and all signs point to it not being up and running by tomorrow.

There are not many big additions in line for the general public. They are adding four decent games, the usual Rockband DLC, some avatars, and less than exciting DLC packs.

PlayStation Plus members will receive one of the better updates they have ever received. Two full games, four avatars, one mini, and two themes will be free as well as a free game trial of Rainbow Six Vegas 2. On top of this, two of the new release games, Outland and Funky Lab Rat, will be discounted for a limited time. Finally, a Resident Evil 5 avatar bundle featuring 10 avatars will be available for only $.99.

As I have stated earlier, this update is not anticipated. Unless something comes up, PSN is expected to be down tomorrow as well. As of now, no one knows how PlayStation will handle the situation. I imagine the update is the least of their worries at the moment with the recent incident still up in the air.

Rumor: PlayStation Network Outage Possibly Due to Custom Firmware

Rumors have been circulating for a couple days that there was a custom firmware being used known as ‘Operation: Rebug’. These rumors have partially been confirmed through a pretty credible source. Essentially, this custom firmware allowed users to setup false developer accounts. While using these accounts, it allowed users to add funds to their account which could be used on anything on the PSN Store. This exploit is reportedly simple and no one knows how many people may have exploited this custom firmware.

Day Five: Great PSN Outage of 2011

It makes sense why they would have pulled PSN as a precaution. Who knows how much the smaller game developers lost through this glitch. But as always, while this is most likely true it will remain a rumor until PlayStation comments on such a topic.

PlayStation Outage Taking Longer than Anticipated

The initial estimate of 1 to 2 days has passed and Sony has kept us minimally updated which is understandable from a PR stand point. No sense updating the general public until they are 100% certain. Sony has confirmed that the outage was caused by an outside force, but they did not specifically label any group.

This morning Sony has announced that they are essentially rebuilding the security system from the ground up. Rumors have been circulating that it was linked to Anonymous while others have stated it was not. Nothing can be confirmed at this point until Sony makes an official announcement. Similar circumstances exist with the time frame. People have been stating ranges as short as tomorrow and as long as two weeks. For now, we just have to take this day by day and hope Sony can fix the outage as quickly and thoroughly as possible. The one benefit of this outage is the fact that I was able to play a bunch of offline games I would not have gotten around to any time soon. So far I’ve beaten Enslaved, played Comet Crash, Shatter, Assassin’s Creed II, and Singularity.

Fallout New Vegas Patch and another DLC teaser image

Hey Fallout Fans! I have been checking the interwebs for news about any Fallout: New Vegas updates or info about the upcoming DLC and we have a bit of news on both fronts.

Honest hearts

First the Fallout Wiki is reporting the exsistence of an official promotional banner for the Honest Hearts DLC on XBox live. To see it for yourself search for Fallout: New Vegas on the Game Marketplace and select the Fallout: New Vegas Teaser Trailer (HD). The banner will show up in the top right corner. The image of a man with bandage covering his nose and mouth is most likely Joshua Graham also known as the Burned Man.

The second thing is a massive patch will be coming to the PC on Monday and the consoles soon according to a post from Jason Bergman.  The patch will not only will improve the stability of the game, but also adds balance tweaks to many of the weapons the in the game. When I say ‘many’ I mean A TON of weapons!

Check out the weapson tweaks:

Guns:

  • Automatic Guns – SMGs, the Assault Carbine, and the LMG are more accurate across the board. They’re also more durable. 12.7mm SMG mag capacity increased to 21.
  • Shotguns – Buckshot has received a x1.2 inherent DAM mod. This slightly incentivizes using buckshot over slugs when enemy armor is not an issue. Magnum buckshot has a x1.3 DAM mod and a small amount of DT bypass. Spread for many shotguns has been lowered.
  • Hunting Rifle, Anti-Materiel Rifle – Hunting Rifle and AMR now have the lowest spread of all rifles. Hunting Rifle RoF increased, Crit Chance set to x2. Anti-Materiel Rifle’s Crit DAM has been raised from 80 to 110 to make it more viable when compared to the Gobi.
  • Sniper Rifle, Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle – Sniper Rifle and Gobi now have a higher RoF and lower AP cost. Both have x2 Crit Chance. Gobi has increased DAM and much higher Crit DAM over the Sniper Rifle.
  • That Gun – That Gun is now a slow-firing hand cannon that does huge DAM firing 5.56mm out of a short barrel.
  • Hunting Revolver – Rate of Fire increased.
  • Service Rifle – DAM slightly lowered, firing animation changed to the one used by Marksman Carbine, RoF dramatically increased. Spread decreased.
  • Silenced .22 Pistol, SMG – Crit DAM and Crit Chance significantly increased.
  • 5mm Ammo – Base ammo has 10 points of DT bypass. AP variants have 25 points of DT bypass. This affects the Assault Carbine, Minigun, and CZ57 Avenger.
  • .308 JSP – DAM mult reduced from x1.5 to x1.3. x2 CND degradation effect added.
  • Lever-Action Rifles – Cowboy Repeater, Trail Carbine, Brush Gun – RoF has been slightly reduced, AP costs have been significantly increased, and spread has been slightly increased. Cowboy Repeater Custom Action RoF increase has been reduced. La Longue Carabine spread has been significantly lowered.

Explosives:

  • Dynamite – Larger explosion radius.
  • Frag and Plasma Grenades – DAM increased.
  • 25mm Grenades – Slightly increased DAM on the explosion.
  • 40mm Grenades – Significantly higher DAM on the explosion.
  • Missile Launcher / Fat Man – Now have much better zoom FoV and good accuracy. Missile and Fat Man projectiles (not the explosion) have a large base DAM. Both are extremely effective on direct hits, but still potent even if a direct hit is not scored. N.B.: Listed DAM on weapons assumes a direct hit!

Energy Weapons:

  • Gatling Laser – Base DAM is higher. Against heavily armored targets, this is still a poor weapon. Against lightly armored targets, especially with Over Charge or Max Charge ECPs + Focus Optics + Laser Commander, it has extraordinary DPS.
  • Tesla Cannon, Tesla-Beaton Prototype – These now consume far less ammo per shot and can be fired several times before a reload. DAM is beefy with an additional 2 second DoT.
  • Pew-Pew – Lower ammo capacity, consumes far fewer ECs per shot. Still a two-shot weapon.

Melee and Unarmed:

  • Ripper, Chainsaw, Thermic Lance – DAM lowered, all ignore DR/DT.
  • Bladed Gauntlet, Mantis Gauntlet – Ignore DR/DT flags removed (were not supposed to be marked as such). Mantis Gauntlet animation/sound fixed.

Perks:

  • Splash Damage – Functions properly.
  • The Professional – 10mm Pistol, SMG added to perk list.
I just hope this patch comes to PS3 and XBox 360 very soon!

PlayStation Network May Be Down for Up to Two Days

The Official US Playstation Blog has announced that the maintenance on the PlayStation Network may take up to a day or two. The servers were brought down roughly 11 AM EST on Thursday April 21st. I imagine since the US blog has announced this time frame, this also means the EU PSN will follow a similar schedule. For now all we can do is hope its quick and easy. Worst case scenario we have everything back up and running midday Saturday.

EU and US PlayStation Network Down for Mainenance

The EU and US PlayStation Networks are currently down for an unannounced maintenance. The maintenance should be concluded by 10:00 PM EST tonight, but during said time you will not be able to access the PlayStation Store, play any online games, or message any friends.

People have been getting two common error messages the first basically stating that PSN has been suspended and the second stating “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network. (80710A06).” Your account has not been suspended nor has your PS3 suffered a fatal error. We’ll find out tonight whats in store after the maintenance. For now find something else to do or enjoy your games offline.

UPDATE: Sony Europe has confirmed that it may have been caused by a possible attack:

“As you are no doubt aware, the current emergency outage is continuing this afternoon and all Sony Online Network services remain unavailable. Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party. If the reported Network problems are indeed caused by such acts, we would like to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service.

Our engineers are continuing to work to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers’ continued support. For further information, please refer to updates on PlayStation.com, here on PlayStation.Blog and via our @PlayStationEU twitter feed.”

As many of you have heard the group “Anonymous” has recently been attacking Playstation for their handling of the GeoHot situation. There is no confirmation that this is a continuation of the prior attacks. At this point we can only speculate.
